A leaky faucet isn’t just annoying—it can also waste a lot of water and increase your utility bill. Luckily, fixing a dripping faucet is usually a simple DIY task that requires minimal tools and effort. Follow this step-by-step guide to stop the drip and restore your faucet to proper working condition.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you start, gather these tools:

✔ Adjustable wrench

✔ Phillips and flathead screwdrivers

✔ Plumber’s tape

✔ Replacement washers and O-rings (specific to your faucet type)

✔ Plumber’s grease

✔ Bucket or towel (to catch water)

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Look under the sink for the shut-off valves and turn them clockwise to shut off the water supply. If you can’t find them, turn off the main water supply for your home. Then, turn on the faucet to drain any remaining water.

Step 2: Remove the Faucet Handle

Use a screwdriver to remove the screw holding the faucet handle in place. This screw is usually hidden under a decorative cap on top of the handle—pry it off gently with a flathead screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the Cartridge or Valve Stem

Depending on your faucet type (compression, ball, cartridge, or ceramic disk), you may need to remove a retaining nut or clip using an adjustable wrench. Once removed, pull out the cartridge or valve stem carefully.

Step 4: Inspect and Replace the Washer or O-Ring

In most cases, a worn-out washer or O-ring is the cause of the leak. Check the rubber components for cracks or signs of wear. Replace them with new ones of the same size, applying plumber’s grease for a secure fit.

Step 5: Reassemble the Faucet

Put the cartridge or valve stem back in place, secure it with the retaining nut or clip, and reattach the handle. Ensure everything is tightly screwed in place.

Step 6: Turn the Water Back On

Slowly turn the water supply back on and test the faucet. If it no longer drips, your repair was successful! If it still leaks, you may need to replace the entire faucet or consult a plumber.

Final Tips

✅ If you're unsure about your faucet type, take the old washer or cartridge to a hardware store to find the exact replacement.

✅ Avoid over-tightening components, as this can cause damage.

✅ Regularly clean your faucet’s aerator to prevent buildup that can affect water flow.

By following these steps, you can quickly and affordably fix a leaky faucet, saving water and preventing further damage.

Happy fixing! 🔧🚰
